Dragged through a mega-hot scorcher of a final tour. We're talkin' 100+ degrees for like a weeks straight. Us Midwestern pencil-necks aren't used to that kinda rays. Played a triumphant last show in July. Who played? I can't remember. Holy Shit did. Leather? Self Interest? Pretty sure that's how it went. Fuck, I'm getting old. Memory's slipping.

Skip forward some months. Bored Straight's been practicing. 2 new songs. More to come. A couple Comp. appearances coming up. 3 shows coming. Milwaukee and Chicago with Libyans and some sort of Fest here in Milwaukee in April. Nothing feels like playing in a hardcore band with 3 of your best friends. It's unreal and I can't find anything to match it.

Days after "the breakup," I had my first practice with what became Lamb's Legs. So off the wall. It's a totally different approach than I've ever taken. We "jam." Sounds gross, I know. But it's the most organic way to work it out. We all do our part. Band as collective, it always seemed like fiction to me. It's not.

We're 2 shows deep in the Lamb's Legs lore. People seem to dig it. I'm glad because I thought it may be too odd. Too many influence pulling from all over. Too much reliance on people having taste. But I guess I underestimate the surrounders sometimes.

Lamb's Legs is an art form of sorts. The things we do are purposeful, and we aim to make pieces that produce thought. It's not pretension. It's simply playing to human curiosities.

It's 4am. I'm cold. Depressed. Isolated. About time for me to head down to the couch to avoid being ravaged by bed bugs in my stupid shitbox room. Moving out soon. Maybe rebuild some walls? Who knows.

More involved music writing soon, hopefully. I just need to belch it out so I can tighten up my words. Music rules, ok.Dan Celebrityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15133654810895756918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222303879335186630.post-15927722051503711942011-06-19T21:51:00.004-06:002011-06-19T23:11:46.737-06:00Waiting for...something.Here we are, back again. Can't same to get a handle on writing this stuff regularly. Been outta a brain scorching semester for about a month. Got 2 more classes to go and I'm out into the world, finding myself...or something like that. If I haven't found IT yet, I don't think I ever will.

Leaving for Bored Straight tour in 5 days. Going to the Southwest for the first time. All the shows are booked before we are on the road. That's a new one. The records are still awol, though. Waiting on a small batch Test Presses, since we knew the entire lot would be a longshot. Now it's a nail biter to see if the Tests will make it in time.

This will be the final BS tour. Nicolai's heading out elsewhere. Looks like Duluth, but I don't know the final verdict on it. There'll be shows through the rest of the summer and maybe the occasional soiree after that. Glad we're only gonna hafta move 300 7"s and not 300 LP's.

Here's some randomness:

1. Bored Games - Joe 90 (Who Killed Colonel Mustard 12" EP/Flying Nun/ 1982). One of the tops outta New Zealand. Not as recognized as The Clean or The Chills or some others, but that's fine. I'd rather not read every hip pub. spouting about how some new lamebrains are copping the Kiwi sounds of the Bored Games. Punker than a lot of their Kiwi contemporaries. Probably the best thing Shayne Carter ever did.

2. Die Kreuzen - Don't Say Please (Cows and Beer 7"/Version Sound/ 1982). After much deliberation, I can't find any reason why Cows and Beer wouldn't be the top of the heap of WI hardcore 7"s. Flawless. Top 5 all time hardcore record. I'd rather not say much cuz words can't approach it. Just listen, dummy.

3. Television Personalities - Magnificent Dreams (Mummy Your Not Watching Me/ Whaam!/1982). So many have tried to tap into that Dan Treacy style, and most fail. The guy really locked into a genius groove for a good chunk of years. Up to the mid-80's, the TVPs were pretty much gold. After that, I'm not all that jazzed by 'em. Those early recs though, solid punk pop.

4. Morrisey - Yes, I Am Blind (Bona Drag/Sire/1990). Sometimes I think that I like Moz more solo than with The Smiths. But overall it's the fact that I like certain chunks of songs by both, but whole albums don't usually pull me in. This one's a slower number, typical of his early solo stuff. Sounds quite a bit like The Smiths, but less distinct guitar than Johnny woulda plunked out. You get the typical lyrical odd lines to make you think deeper into the song. Blah blah. Woulda rather been listening to "Suedehead."

5. Days Of... - Dream Girl (info on this one's hard to find). Found out about these guys in an article that Brian Walsby wrote for Left Of The Dial magazine, close to 10 years ago. Took quite a few years of searching to find the mp3s. Still haven't seen the actual record. Off the top of my head, can't even tell ya the title. Very Rites Of Spring/ Revolution Summer derived. Not at the ROS level, but good nonetheless. Featured Scott from Double Negative, maybe Kevin too. Sounds like his vocals. Fuck, I need to get my hands on this record.

6. Smoking Popes - Brand New Hairstyle (Inoculator EP/ Radius Records/ 1991). I've always been into these guys. The first show that got me outside of my hometown area was to see 'em with Alligator Gun at the Concert Cafe in Green Bay. This song's on a different level from the rest of their stuff. It's got a rawness that isn't found elsewhere in their catalog. Catchy too. Someone place the vinyl in my hands. Thanks. If time allowed, I could regal ya with some dumb tales of seeing them at a Christmas show (Wolfie ruled, whereas Karate put me to sleep on my feet), but I'll keep it to myself and move on.

7. Nada Surf - Hollywood (High/Low/ Elektra Records /1996). I really liked "Popular" when it was all over MTV throughout my HS years. Glad to find out that the rest of the record is solid 90's alt-rock. Can't say I care about the later stuff at all, but this record's great.

8. Avon Ladies - Arcadia Mom (demo/no label/20--). The notorious Chris Erba returns to the mic. Definitely the most immediately likeable thing I've heard him do. Thought I heard the lineup was him fronting Pigeon Religion, but I'm not sure. Regardless, it's great shit. Bass thud pulling along, guitar feedback n' squawk, demented vocals without sounding contrived. Great band.

9. TSOL - Black Magic (Change Today?/Enigma Records/1984). Bought this record when I was 16 and hated it. I just wasn't ready for it. Here we are, some years later, and it's sounding great to me. Deathrock with some post punk, and a little twang. It's a damn shame the later TSOL stuff's got such a bad rep, cuz people are really missing out. Ahh, who'm I kidding. Most people have shit taste.

10. NukkeHammer - Savage Winter (demo/ no label/ 20--). I don't understand the appeal of this band. The sea of D-beat is a deep one to wade through. Maybe I gotta catch 'em live?Dan Celebrityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15133654810895756918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222303879335186630.post-63966857448726866832011-04-19T23:39:00.002-06:002011-04-19T23:50:12.571-06:00Cold Marching. Here we are again. School's winding down and that's always good. Two classes to go once I get the present junk over with.

It's almost May and still cold here. I hate it, but am not at all surprised by it.

There should be a new Bored Straight 7" sometime in June. Tour of the Southwest to follow.

Bought a Gauze bootleg today that has the same tracks on the B-side as the boot of Fuckheads that came out in recent years. Needed the A-side songs. It's fucking Gauze. No questions asked.

New shit that's eating at my eardrums: Folded Shirt - LP; Avon Ladies - Demo; Raw Nerve - New LP; Milk Music - Beyond Living; Sweet Tooth - Japanese Void 7"; Neon Blud - B Girls.

Anxiously awaiting: new Puerto Rico Flowers record; Neon Blud records.Dan Celebrityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15133654810895756918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222303879335186630.post-49343593964613593222011-03-17T22:15:00.007-06:002011-03-17T22:30:10.268-06:00More pics. Got a cold. Or is it allergies. No idea. Alls I know is I'm swimming through the clouds on this here syrup. Gonna hit the pillow for a little coma-doze.

Went on tour recently. Threw down a few hundred on records. I mean, isn't that one of the primary reasons for touring anyway? Had a coupla Iron Cross 7"s in my fingers. Sure they're crap records, but romantic ones at that. Mr. Epp, Fuck Ups, stared 'em in the face too. Couldn't pull the trigger. Knew it'd be another day, another city, another record store for the duration of tour. Spoiled Brats - Rip Off 7" probably being my top grab for the time spent digging. Scratch that, first Helmet 7" for $10. Never seen it before, never thought I'd find it, especially not for that price.

So what's tickling my eardrums these days? Puerto Rico Flowers 7" and 12" are jaw droppers. That new-ish Zola Jesus 12"EP kills too. Picked up a Zoogz Rift LP, along with Eddy Grant "Electric Avenue" and Byrds "So You Want To Be a Rock N Roll Star" 7"s. Great day. Ceremony (not the Bridge 9 band) LP, new Drunkdriver, Broken Water, Wild America demo and 7". All winners.

One day I'll post regularly. Maybe.Dan Celebrityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15133654810895756918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222303879335186630.post-29015239705358467812010-01-03T05:16:00.002-06:002010-01-03T05:29:02.932-06:00Chilled to the bone. It's 5am. Not as immediately jarring as songs like "Ratfucker," but still awesome in its own right.

2. Sneaky Feelings - Backroom (The Dunedin Double EP/Flying Nun/1981). Not sure the idea behind a double EP, a single LP seems more logical, but who am I? Arguably the best double 7" to come out, period. Kiwis doing the fuzzy jangle pop thing better than most.

3. Wasp Factory - Australia (Wasp Factory LP/???/1986). Elusive Kiwis these folks. I know this is offa their self titled LP. That's alls I can tell ya, though. Someone put it out. Maybe self released. It's a group sung stomper. Primal and folky.

4. Double Happys - Beercans On The Ground (Biding Our Time comp. LP/Failsafe/1986). Dark sorta Warsaw/peace punk sounding tune. Repetative riff drives into your brain.

5. Liimanarina - 600 Uusnatsia (Maailman Tylsin Vittumaisuus/Bad Vugum?/1989)
Detailed Twang blog referred to this as, "first-EP Meat Puppets reborn as a "Calling All Girls"-era Half Japanese cover band." Not a bad comparison. Pumping drums and wailing vocals. Guitar's clean and scorching. Lo-fi bashing.

6. 13th Floor Elevators - Slip Inside (Easter Everywhere/United Artists/1967). Opening track. Not as throttling of an opener as "You're Gonna Miss Me," but one that nearly any band would welcome onto their album with open arms. Still don't like the jug player sound. It reminds me of on Wayne's World when they had a flashback. They made the same noise. Wonder if there's a connection there? If I ever run into 'em on the street I'll be sure to inquire. Fuck, this song's 8 minutes long. That's risky business opening with something that long. It works. No arguments.

7. Dead C - Crazy I Know (Live Dead See demo/self released?/1988). Weird. The chance to call these guys melodic doesn't come along everyday, but here it is. Their's a weird shoegazey feel to it. Lots of vocals too. There's glimpses of where they'd go, but still quite difference from more recent output. Haven't ventured toward this demo in a while. Forgot how great it is.

8. Chris Knox - I Wanna Look Like Darcy Clay (Beat/Thirsty Ear/2000). Not the biggest fan of his solo stuff. Toy Love and Tall Dwarfs are some of my favorite Kiwi bands, but the solo stuff has always been hit or miss for me. This one's solid though. Bit of a Velvets feel in the guitar.

9. Bats, The - Offside (And Here Is... Music For The Fireside EP/Flying Nun/1985). Can't say that I'm super into much of their catalog. Laidback acoustic number. Catchy folk-pop.

10. Dwarves, The - She's Dead (b/w Fuckhead/Sub Pop/1990). Ah, remember when the Dwarves were blown out and dangerous? That Free Cocaine comp that Recess put out was pretty warping when it came out. I was 19 and highly impressionable. Made Mr. Nice Guy want to engage in debauchery. It's garage punk, but it's bordering on hardcore. Blur the line. Why not? Short blast of a once great band.Dan Celebrityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15133654810895756918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222303879335186630.post-34605829772001244512008-10-21T20:27:00.003-06:002008-10-24T18:41:05.061-06:00New idea.Alright, I'm way too busy to stay on top of writing about new releases right now. Reviews of 2007 releases? Forget about 'em. They're dead to me. Maybe I'll try to catch up on 2008, but probably not. My intake is so frenzied that there's no way to catch up, gotta start from where I'm at.

Hitting the books full time these days, so there's not always free time to do shit I want to be doing. Been freelancing for a few publications too. Bringing in a few extra dollars and cents here and there. Playing in Bored Straight still, too. Buy our 7". We've got a lot of 'em.

To get back in the swing of writing on this ole thingie, I'm gonna put the Winamp on shuffle. First 5-10 songs get written up. Regardless of what they are, I'll spew about 'em. Let's see how this goes:

1. Scorched Earth Policy - Batwing (Foaming Out cassette/Xpressway/1991). Part of my vast collection of Kiwi bands. Not particularly familiar with this one. Might be live. I don't know. Kinda droney, thick distortion. I remember their releases being pretty decent.

2. Half Japanese - Gloria (We Are They Who Ache With Amorous Love/TEC Tones/1990). Blown out deconstructed cover in the 1/2 Japanese tradition. Who did it originally? Them? Real primal stomper of a take on this 'un. If this doesn't get the blood pumping then you ain't got a rockin' bone in yer body.

3. Los Llamarada - Better Stand Up. Overblown and mind scrambling. Pumps forward and ends abruptly. Not sure what it's off of, some demo I think. Don't worry about it. Just find their records and scoop 'em up. Not a bad one in the bunch.

4. Colin Newman - Not Me(A-Z/Beggars Banquet/1980). Offa the first solo record by former (at the time) Wire frontman. The whole album's solid. Fits right in with the first 3 Wire records. A must own. Yeah, this coming from a guy who doesn't own it. Put it in my mitts. I'll slide ya the dough.

5. 13th Floor Elevators - Earthquake (Easter Everywhere/International Artists/1967). I recently stated that I might like The Bubble Puppy as much or more than the Elevators. Been rethinking it. BP's record's pretty great, but you can't fuck with Roky's vocals. The songwriting's solid. Only thing I can't handle is the damn jug player. It would be cool in touches, but throughout the entirety? You kiddin' me? This one's offa Easter Everywhere. Not quite as jarring as the debut, but no slouch of a record let me tell ya. "Earthquake" feels like "Rollercoaster" on a bit of speed. Killer, fo' sho'.

6. Pink Reason - Dead End (live). Haven't heard this in a while. Live version, I think with Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones. What do I say? I could gush like a school girl about Pink Reason. And this song's one of my favorites. Russia/Eastern European music's got a certain darkness to it and Pink Reason's an extension of that.

7. No Hope For The Kids - Angels Of Destruction (b/w Cold Touch of Death/Backwards Masking/2006). Recently got the discography tape. The thing didn't leave my tape deck for weeks. Fucking great band. Early comparisons to Warsaw aren't all that on the mark. Has the same ominous feel, but not the same sound. More of a uptempo peace punk sound.

8. Birchville Cat Motel - Transparent Soul Fragment (Birchville Cat Motel/Insample/1997). Kiwi noise. 7 minutes of droning and weaving frequencies. Intensifies. Melts brain. Ends.

9. Lollipop Shoppe - I'm Gonna Be There (Just Colour/UNI/1968). For all this time I thought I only liked one LS song, but this one's changing my mind. The vocals get over impassioned at times, but not enough to kill it. Dead Moon guy, right (correct -ed.)? Damn fine laid back 60's garage churner.

10. Plagal Grind - (live song 12). Not sure on song titles. Found a live show and that's all I know 'bout it. Dirging, driving, petering out. Another Kiwi winner.Dan Celebrityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15133654810895756918noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222303879335186630.post-66811504300151747202007-12-09T23:35:00.000-06:002007-12-09T23:45:38.922-06:00Blog's not Dead!Yeah, I haven't done shit with this blog in a while. Wish I could say that I have some grand scheme, but I don't. I'm just lazy. There's a few pieces being worked on right now: a Siltbreeze round-up (all 8 releases from this year), Ecstatic Peace blurb (3 reviews), reunion records (Dinosaur Jr/Buffalo Tom), shitty record run-down, and a review of the Slogun Shogun EP (since he is the only person that sent me material to review). Here's something to chew on until then, my top 5 full lengths of the year (Pending anything great coming out before the end of the year. TV Ghost 12"?):

1. Jesu - Conqueror (Hydrahead)
2. Pink Reason - Cleaning The Mirror (Siltbreeze)
3. Double Negative - The Wonderful and Frightening World Of... (No Way)
4. A Place To Bury Strangers - S/T (Killer Pimp)
5. Clockclean er - Babylon Rules (Load)

Maybe at some point I'll expand beyond 5. Or, maybe I'll grade the 7"s of the year. I'll have more of something soon.Dan Celebrityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15133654810895756918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6222303879335186630.post-19491273567106585872007-07-28T22:00:00.000-06:002014-07-28T21:44:45.885-06:00Punk Planet reviews round 1 (PP79)

Another Breath-Mill City CD

This is a pretty good summary of what modern hardcore is. With that being said, they’re not bringing anything new to the table. It’s not bad by any means, it just isn’t anything that I’d flip out over. Maybe they should have titled the album Run of the Mill City. ((DA))

Rivalry

Day of the Dead -A New Healing Process CD

Mid-tempo epic hardcore with indecipherable vocals. They remind me of Orchid if you pared them down to just the straightforward riffs and expanded them into full songs. They’re from Portugal. How often do you hear that? I guess that’s the only significant thing about these guys. ((DA))

State Of Mind Recordings

Everything Falls Apart -Escape 7"

This is the debut rager by Buffalo, NY’s Everything Falls Apart. With the amount of generic hardcore that I get fed to review, it’s pretty easy to get cynical. Records like this one keep me from losing my mind. There’s nothing negative to say about it. Good layout and light blue opaque vinyl coupled with rock solid no frills hardcore. Phenomenal. ((DA))

Few and the Proud, the -Stampede CD

The info sheet name checks Judge and Slapshot as influences and I can’t disagree with that. Stampede is the debut full length by Chicago straight edge purveyors the Few and the Proud. On first listen I thought the album was pretty bland, but it grew on me. Would I rather be listening to John Caution’s other band, Weekend Nachos? Yes, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is 22 minutes of quality, modern hardcore. ((DA))

Hammer Bros. -The Vitality CD

Check it out, another really boring metallic hardcore record! Maybe they’re really good live or something, because I can’t figure this one out. There’s a virtual sea of records like this right now. I’m bored. ((DA))

Know the Score -All Time Low CD

The whole album reeks of trying too hard to say fuck you. Know the Score is pissed and they want to point the finger at the culprits. There’s so much of this stuff out there that I’m running out of things to say about it. Maybe I need to come up with a form review for bad metallic modern hardcore? ((DA))

Life Crisis -Churchstate 7"

Pretty straight up thrash blazing at you from this release. The early DRI and COC comparisons are pretty accurate. It’s on Deep Six, so you can trust that it’s going to be some quality hardcore. Nerd stat, it’s on grayish blue vinyl. ((DA))

Deep Six

My Hero Died Today -From Our Cold Dead Hands CD

Technical hardcore in the vein of Refused. The problem lies in the fact that Refused pulled off this sound and My Hero Died Today doesn’t. I’m stuck in the middle on this one, it’s decent but I don’t foresee myself throwing this CD on in the future. ((DA))

I think I let a lot of these guys off easy, in the spirit of being objective. My reviews for Punk Planet always felt sort of neutered in the way that they're always trying to give an accurate perception of the music because someone out there will like it... Ugh. If it sucks, let me say that it's a pile of dog shit. Don't candy coat it.

About a week ago I decided to start a music blog, separate from my personal whinings on my My Space blog. So I guess this is still personal whinings, but it'll be about music...instead of my stupid life.

Starting this blog didn't seem all that necessary for me, but I decided to do it nonetheless. Then, today I discovered that Punk Planet has stopped publication. With nowhere to spout off my indifference toward lots of shitty bands, this blog was immediately thrust into a role of necessity.

I'll add some reviews soon...hopefully. With no editors or deadlines breathing down my neck, the motivation might not always be there. My reviews will lean toward newer stuff, mainly releases from 2007. At times I may do write ups of overlooked favorites. Maybe I'll do some interviews? We'll see what happens.Dan Celebrityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15133654810895756918noreply@blogger.com1
